Our History

The Beginning

In the early 1970s a group of dedicated local golfers had an idea. Rather than maintain memberships at clubs that catered to hotel and convention visitors during South Florida's busy winter season, why not break away and create a place of their own?

Most of the group, which was 60 strong, belonged to clubs like the Breakers golf club in Palm Beach and Breakers West, two courses that restricted play to accommodate their guests during the season.

Emboldened by the concept of creating something that they could shape and be a part of, Mayacoo founding members Bill Lord and Bill Clark took the lead and reached out to golf great Jack Nicklaus to see if he would help. The Golden Bear agreed and soon the team was busy visiting different pieces of property before settling on the current location, which was owned by the Breakers. Once an agreement was reached, the land was purchased in 1971 and Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead were hired to design the course. Maycaoo Lakes Country Club was one of the first courses that Jack Nicklaus designed.

Soon after the club opened in October of 1972, Mayacoo Lakes Golf Club was rated in the top 100 by Golf  Digest -- the first of many awards the club would receive. At that time, the entry to the property was from SR 7 and the  clubhouse was a trailer located where the tennis pro shop is today.  Mayacoo's clubhouse was built in 1976.

Today

It's been more than forty years since the 60 founding members of Mayacoo had an idea that they worked to turned into reality. Today the club is stronger than ever, thanks to a continuum of updates and improvements.

Mayacoo is one of the area's few clubs that can boast the longevity and the family feel that it maintains. With many new high end clubs in the South Florida region, the competition to attract new members and to ensure a vital and active membership is fierce, but Mayacoo is dedicated to keeping itself fresh and relevant to the current and future generations of members.

How has Mayacoo achieved this?

To start, we updated and improved the golf course in 2007. This effort led to Maycacoo’s winning Golf Digest’s “America’s Best New Course-Best New Remodeled Category” Award in 2008.

In addition, we offer a full complement of club programs and amenities, including swimming and tennis facilities and an excellent and well-rounded social and dining event calendar. In anticipation of a busy 2018-2019 season, we have created a comprehensive schedule of activities for our members, their families and friends.

Mayacoo is a special place and the staff and all of our members work hard to project and nurture its image and reputation. We have a responsibility to protect the vision that our founding members had more than four decades ago and we take it very seriously. Come see Mayacoo for yourself, we know you will be impressed. It is a very unique and memorable place.
